The Ultimate Birthday Party Idea: Jewellery Making Fun

I was asked by a customer to create a kit for a tween girl’s birthday party. She wanted to make jewellery with her friends, so I created this cute set for them, consisting of a necklace, stretchy bracelet and dangly earrings.

I used some fun colours – purple, lime and pink – what a combination. I also added a butterfly charm because most tween girls love charms and butterflies. I hope you like it.

Maybe this is something you could do for your tween’s birthday party.

Materials

To make this jewellery set you will need:

Tools

‍Chain Nose Pliers (x2)‍
Round Nose Pliers ‍
Flush Cutters
Needle*
Small piece of scrap wire to apply glue

* The eye should be large enough to take elastic, make sure it goes through the beads with some spare room as you will need to thread the elastic through each bead twice.

Necklace

Making the Components

Cut eight pieces of wire 3cm long. Make sure that the end is flush (you may need to trim it with the flush side of your cutters).

Make a loop in the end of one piece of the wire using the round nose pliers.

Add one pink bead. Make a right angled bend on top of the bead.

Make a loop in the end of the wire.

Repeat this process until you have the following components:

2 pink components
2 lime components
2 crystal components
2 purple components

Open the loop on one end of the pink component and attach the lime component, then repeat to join four of the components – pink, lime, crystal, purple.

Attaching the Charm

Make sure that the loops on the pink component are at right angles to each other. Open one of the 4mm jump rings and attach both of the pink components to it. Close the jump ring.

Open one of the 6mm jump rings and thread it onto the 4mm jump ring. Add the charm to the jump ring as well. Close the jump ring.

Adding the Chain

Cut the chain into two pieces 18cm long. Open the loop on one of the purple components and thread on the chain. Close the loop.

Repeat for the other side.

Adding the Clasp

Check which side you wish to put the clasp on (for right handed people it’s usually the right side and the opposite for left handed). Open the remaining 4mm jump ring and thread on the end of the chain and the lobster clasp. Close the jump ring.

For the other piece of chain, open the 6mm jump ring and attach it to the end of the chain.

Here’s my finished necklace.

Bracelet

Threading the Beads

Thread the needle with the elastic then thread the beads onto the elastic in the following order, adding a beaded rondelle between each bead. Notice that there are two beaded rondelles together at the centre.

Take your needle back through all of the beads from where you began, pulling up the elastic to make a circle as you go. Be careful not to pull so tight that you break the elastic.

Remove the needle and tie an overhand knot in the elastic. Be careful not to break the elastic – it needs to be tight enough so that there are no gaps but not too tight.

Tie a second knot, this time crossing the elastic around twice. Pull firmly.

Using the small piece of scrap wire, add a dollop of glue onto the knot.

Trim off the ends of the elastic and pull the knot through into the next bead so that it disappears.

Adding the Charm

Open the remaining 6mm jump ring and thread on the charm. Place the jump ring between the beaded rondelles that are together in the middle of the bracelet. Close the jump ring.

Earrings

Cut two pieces of wire 5cm long. Trim them with the flat side of your cutters so that both ends are flush. Make a loop in the end of each piece of wire.
